About/Help

This Chinese/English dictionary provides an easy search. Searches can be done by typing in either the english word you are searching for, the chinese word you are searching for, or the pinyin that you are searching for.

Legend:
Search the column for text, or specify a max and min text to limit the column to.
Sort the column from A to Z.
Sort the column in reverse, from Z to A.
Show the contents of the column.
Hide the column.

A header was sent to your browser to tell it to use the ISO-8859-1 charset, which every browser in the world has. Even though your browser is still in the western european charset, Chinese characters are still able to be encoded and read from your browser. If you have changed the encoding on your browser from western european to something else, then you must change it back before you can conduct searches by chinese words.

Tips:
  • To search for a particular phrase, put double quotes around the search term like this "Take it Easy". The words within the double quotes will be searched for as a single entity.
  • If multiple words are entered and are not surrounded by double quotes, then each word is searched for separately, and any dictioary entry containing any word will be returned.
  • It doesn't matter if you type in the search word as uppercase or lowercase, this dictionary is case-insensitive.
  • If you are searching by pinyin and can't find the results you are looking for, try inserting spaces between the pinyin syllables, and if it still doesn't work try to remove any numbers.
  • There are some profanities in this dictionary. If you are sensitive to profanities, then simply do not search for them.

Chinese Search:
Most chinese words in this dictionary are the traditional characters. In the future, we will remove this restriction, but for now you must search for traditional chinese, pinyin, or english, but not simplified chinese. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Pinyin Search:
When searching by pinyin, it is important to remember that there are about 10 different pinyin systems. You may find it difficult to gues the spelling of the word. While future support is planned to make this dictionary auto-correct mispelt words in the future, it will not happen for a while. Try to insert spaces between the pinyin syllables that you are searching for. Although you will get many more results with the spaces, it is currently the only way to extend the search.

English Search:
When searching by english, you may get very many results for your search. You can narrow down these results by putting multiple words within "Double Quotes".

Entry Details:
You can see more details about a search result by clicking on the underlined Chinese word or phrase. The details will show the pinyin spelling, the traditional chinese variant, the simplified chinese variant, the english definition, and related terms. The entry details will also have a flash movie with the chinese word or phrase, which you can print or play the pinyin pronunciation of the chinese phrase with. This is extremely helpful for the beginning chinese student, as the tones are the most difficult aspect of chinese speech to master. This entry details page also has the advantage of being able to speak the entire pronunciation of the chinese word or phrase without the user needing to click on each separate pinyin syllable. It is an excellent chinese practice tool.

Pronunciation Sounds:
When you click on a pinyin syllable, your browser will be asked to play the sound. Though there are certain older browsers which are not compatible with playing a sound given certain user input.

You can also listen to a pronunciation of the word or phrase by clicking on the entry details, described above, where you can see a larger spelling of the chinese word in a flash movie, and play the pinyin sounds through that movie. This is helpful because 1) if your browser is not able to play mp3s, then the flash movie will be able to play the pronunciation sounds and 2) You will have a large, printable, chinese word or phrase in front of you, which will be easy to make out and 3) you will not have to click on each pinyin syllable separately, just click the play button once and it will play through all the pinyin syllables in order.
